The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Project is a philanthropic initiative envisioned by the 52nd al-Dai al-Mutlaq, the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. The project aims to offer dignified living conditions and a conducive business environment, backed by state-of-the-art infrastructure and modern facilities to its inhabitants.

The name ‘Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust’ combines the names of the 52nd and 51st Dai Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin and Syedna Taher Saifuddin, as well as the 53rd Dai and leader of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra community, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, under whose guidance the project is taking shape.

About The Trust

A public charitable trust.

Established in 2009, Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) is a public charitable trust registered under the provisions of the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 to undertake the redevelopment of the Bhendi Bazaar neighbourhood in Mumbai. The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Project is an undertaking of the SBUT. The project is an ‘Urban Renewal Scheme/Cluster Development’ under the provisions of Development Control Regulations (DCR) 33(9).

Milestones

2009-10

A New Dawn

In 2009, the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) was established, signaling a fresh beginning for Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai’s bustling trading hub. The ensuing Saifee Burhani Upliftment Project (SBUP) embarked on a mission of revitalisation. The Trust swiftly commenced construction of transit homes in Mazagaon, ensuring residents have suitable accommodations during the redevelopment phase.

2011

Laying the foundation for a holistic transformation

2011 marked a significant milestone in the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Project as the foundation laying ceremony coincided with the auspicious occasion of the 100th Milad Mubarak of His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin.

2012

Handholding during the transitioning phase

The first buildings were demolished and the first 100 tenants were relocated to the Anjeerwadi transit facility.

2013-15

A time of consolidation and progress

His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin left for his heavenly abode which was a very difficult time for community at large, yet the unwavering perseverance of team SBUT, led by Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin and the Chairman, shone through. Approvals and certifications were obtained, setting the stage for further progress.

2016-17

Commencement of Construction

Construction commenced for the first phase of the project. Over 600 families and 120 shops were included in this phase.

2018

New beginnings

The first commercial tenants were given possession of their new shops. This marked the beginning of their journey as shop owners.

2019 - 2020

From vision to reality

610 families were rehabilitated and welcomed to their new homes.

2021 - 2022

Raising the bar with Phase 2 construction

The next phase of the project was commenced. Construction began on the next four towers of the project.

2023

A tribute to the cultural legacy

In a momentous step forward on SBUT’s transformative journey, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin inaugurated the magnificent Saifee Masjid, also known as ‘Ghurratul Masajid’ (the foremost of all Masjids).

2024

Endless Possibilities

A new ray of joy was realised for the people of Bhendi Bazaar as the handover process for shop owners in Al-Ezz commenced in the beginning of this year. Simultaneously, the documentation process for the Permanent Agreement of residents was also initiated, marking a significant milestone in the second phase of the project.
